7 Tips for Packing Dishes from the Experts

7 Tips for Packing Dishes from the Experts

Are you moving to a new home soon? If so, you are likely realizing that packing and moving can be a lot of work. One of the most difficult rooms to move is the kitchen. With so many small and large odds and ends, moving the kitchen can be a full-time job. Are you looking for tips and tricks that can make packing, moving and storing dishes easier? Read below!

How to Pack Plates and Dishes

  1. Ensure all dishes are clean: Before packing up your plates and bowls, run them through the dishwasher to remove any food residue. This step is especially important if you plan on storing the dishes, because storing dirty dishes can result in mold or mildew forming.
  2. Find new and clean boxes: Next, locate boxes to use for your move. It is important to always use new boxes when moving dishes. Not only are old boxes usually weaker, but if they once held food, it’s possible that an odor is leftover in the cardboard.
  3. Load up on packing paper: When lifting and moving items as fragile as dishes, it is important to use packing paper. Packing paper will help to cushion the dishes so they do not break. Before placing dishes into the box, crumple up packing paper and place it in the bottom of the box.
  4. Wrap all dishes with packing paper: Next, wrap each dish and bowl with a piece of packing paper. When wrapping the dishes, place the packing paper diagonally on the dish and tuck the ends of the paper around to secure it in place.
  5. Load plates and bowls on their sides: All plates and bowls should be loaded on their sides into the box. This makes the dishes the most stable and will help to prevent them from breaking.
  6. Place heavier items towards the bottom of the box: When loading the box, place heavier dishes and bowls towards the bottom of the box. Lighter items can go towards the top of the box.
  7. Top off the box with padding: If there is any extra space in the box, it is essential to add soft materials such as towels, dish rags or crumpled up packing paper to the top. This will help to prevent any of the dishes from shifting or breaking during the move.
