6 Step Process for Moving a Washer and Dryer into Storage

6 Step Process for Moving a Washer and Dryer into Storage

Appliances are expensive, bulky and heavy, which makes moving them around very difficult. Are you moving your washer or dryer to a new location? Maybe you’re moving homes and looking to transport these appliances with you. Or, maybe you just recently upgraded appliances and are looking for a storage solution for the old washer and dryer. No matter the reason, it is important to properly move and store your washer and dryer. Try out these 6 steps below!

6 Steps for Moving and Storing a Washer and Dryer

  • Step 1: Check the owner’s manual- The first step is to check the owner’s manual for any instructions on moving or storing your washer and dryer. Each model has its own specific instructions, and checking the owner’s manual will prevent you from missing any necessary steps.
  • Step 2: Clean the washing machine- Next, run a clean rinse through the machine. This will help to remove any built-up detergent, which can cause mold or mildew to form during storage. If you’re still worried about built-up detergent, try running a solution of water and vinegar through the machine. Additionally, clean out the lint tray to remove any built up or remaining lint.
  • Step 3: Turn the water off- Next, it’s time to turn the water off. In order to turn off the water, reach around the machine and turn the water valve clockwise. Once the water has been turned off, remove the hoses connecting the water to the washing machine and place them inside of the dryer. This will prevent the hoses from getting lost during transportation.
  • Step 4: Cover the washer and dryer- Use heavy blankets or moving blankets to cover the washer and dryer when moving the appliances. This will prevent the appliances from getting scratched. If you are planning on also storing the appliances, keep them covered during storage.
  • Step 5: Use an appliance dolly- A washer and dryer can easily weigh 150-200 pounds each. When moving a washer and dryer, always use an appliance dolly. Washer and dryers are large and heavy. The last thing you want when transporting these items is to accidentally bump or ding them.
  • Step 6: Always use a climate controlled storage unit- When storing any appliance, it is essential to use a storage unit that can control the climate. Over time, fluctuations in temperature can cause the electronic and mechanical parts of the appliances to rust or crack.
